Helen Mary Micco présente ce document dans son livre de 1971 : The camp of the French Scientists at Sea Elephant Bay, King Island. To the left of the nearer tent may be seen the English flag with, below it, a sentry sitting by a fere. On the nearer side of the far tent is the frame of the kitchen, with smoke coming from it. On the beach, Mr Grimes, at the theodolite, and the other men carrying out a survey, indifferent to the two sea elephants behind them . Elle attribue ce document à N.M. Petit. Il est vrai que le Capitaine Baudin dans sa lettre au Gouverneur King du 23 décembre 1802, parle du dessin-caricature fait par Petit de l'incident du drapeau anglais et de la sentinelle (voir Péron, t. 3, p. 12), mais il dit l'avoir déchiré : Mr Petit of whose talents you are aware, made a complete caricature of the event. Il is true that the flag sentry was sketched. I tore up this caricature as soon as I saw it, and gave instructions that such was not to be repeated in future.
